(04-18) 04:00 PDT Blacksburg, Va. - Cho Seung-Hui rarely spoke to his own dormitory roommate. His teachers were so disturbed by some of his writing that they referred him to counseling. And when Cho finally and horrifyingly came to the world's attention on Monday, he did so after writing a note that bitterly lashed out at his fellow students for what he deemed their moral decline. Cho's eruption of violence, in which 32 victims were killed on the Virginia Tech campus in a rampage of gunfire, was never directly signaled by his actions or words, several of his acquaintances said Tuesday. But those acquaintances were frequently disturbed by his isola... Shooter had twisted past... Mr. Grewal said he went back to sleep but, according to authorities, Cho stayed awake. According to school officials, Cho even posted a deadly warning on a school online forum.“im going to kill people at vtech today,” they said he wrote.By around 7:15 a.m. Monday, Cho had left his Harper Hall dorm for West Ambler Johnston dormitory. There he went to see Emily Hilscher, described as a friend by officials. She and the resident adviser, who came to investigate, were shot to death. As police investigated, Cho was on the move. He had a backpack containing knives and ammo magazines, sources said. He was armed with two handguns. After leaving the scene of the first shooting, Cho telephoned authorities with a threat, saying there was a bomb at Norris Hall, about half a mile away from Johnston. At Norris, officials said Cho chained shut the doors from the inside and began shooting people. Thirty were killed before Cho turned the gun on himself, officials said.“He did not seem like a guy that’s capable of anything like this,” Mr. Grewal said.Among the dead was Romanian-born Liviu Librescu, a dual U.S.-Israeli citizen who moved two decades ago to the United States and taught in the engineering science and mechanics department at Virginia Tech.Students described how Mr. Librescu, 76, used his body to barricade the door against Cho so they could escape by jumping out ... Zero pushes Coke's numbers higher... J&J is still the leading worldwide seller of stents, with a 48 percent market share, the company said. Pharmaceutical revenue rose 11 percent to $6.2 billion. WASHINGTON MUTUAL INC. said Tuesday its first-quarter profits slid 20 percent amid a nationwide implosion of the subprime home loan market. The Seattle-based company, the nation's largest savings and loan, said its net income was $784 million, or 86 cents a share, for the three months ended March 31. Revenue rose about 1 percent to $3.62 billion. Analysts polled by Thomson Financial were looking for earnings of 83 cents on $3.6 billion in revenue. Kerry Killinger, Washington Mutual's chairman and chief executive, said the company's retail banking, card services and commercial groups fared well, while the home loan market - particularly the subprime segment - remained a serious challenge.
