Sales jumped after the purchase of the database manager Factiva.

Net income declined to $22.6 million from $61.5 million a year earlier.

Sales climbed 18 percent to $507.2 million, Dow Jones said.

Factiva contributed most of the revenue gain, Dow Jones said.

The company bought the outstanding 50 percent of the database manager from Reuters Group last quarter as part of the effort by Richard Zannino, the chief executive, to reduce the company's reliance on newspapers.

Revenue at The Wall Street Journal dropped 1.8 percent.
