In this situation, the patient wears one contact for distance vision in the dominant eye and one contact for near vision in the other eye. The problem with that is that you don't have clear vision from both eyes at any distance, and have decreased binocular vision (ie depth perception). With monovision also, for driving, you have to either remove the near contact and replace it with a distance contact or wear corrective spectacles over the contacts. What kinds of problems are there with these lenses?
Bifocal spectacle lenses have two lens segments with different powers. There is a top part you look through for distance, and then you turn your eyes down and look through the bottom for reading. However, with a contact lens, it fits directly over the cornea/pupil, so you can't really look down through a different part of the lens.
