"This infection, if left untreated, leads to keratitis, which is a very severe form of eye infection," said Dr Al Kobaisi.

Keratitis is an inflammation of the cornea, the outermost part of the eye.

"It is usually caused by herpes simplex virus, the same virus that causes cold sores," she added.

"Keratitis needs to be treated, but untreated cases can cause permanent eye damage," she said.

"What we need to understand is that in Bahrain, the major cause of keratitis is "In most of the cases at the SMC, the lenses that are dispensed to customers are not suitable for their eyes," Dr Al Kobaisi added.

She said there were around eight cases every month that were admitted to the eye wards for treatment.

"With proper advice and education, these complications can be avoided," said the official.

"We are co-ordinating with officials in the Licensing Directorate in the ministry so that there can be some check on such outlets," she said.
