Bifocal spectacle lenses have two lens segments with different powers. There is a top part you look through for distance, and then you turn your eyes down and look through the bottom for reading. However, with a contact lens, it fits directly over the cornea/pupil, so you can't really look down through a different part of the lens. The lens manufacturers thus had to figure out a way to get you to see both near and far through the contact lens itself.
