Dow Jones sales climb after Factiva purchase Dow Jones, owner of The Wall Street Journal, said first-quarter profit fell 63 percent from a year earlier when the company had a gain from a legal settlement.

Sales jumped after the purchase of the database manager Factiva.

Net income declined to $22.6 million from $61.5 million a year earlier.

Sales climbed 18 percent to $507.2 million, Dow Jones said.

Factiva contributed most of the revenue gain, Dow Jones said.

The company bought the outstanding 50 percent of the database manager from Reuters Group last quarter as part of the effort by Richard Zannino, the chief executive, to reduce the company's reliance on newspapers.

Revenue at The Wall Street Journal dropped 1.8 percent.

investment manager being acquired by Bank of New York, said first-quarter earnings rose 22 percent as assets topped $1 trillion for the first time.

Net income increased to $252 million from $207 million a year earlier, the company said.

Revenue rose 13 percent to $1.41 billion from $1.24 billion.

Investment assets at Mellon, based in Pittsburgh, rose 28 percent from a year earlier, driven by investor deposits of $27 billion in the first quarter.
